EPFO Online 2026: All Services You Can Do Without Office

Most EPFO work is now online:

  • Members: fix your profile, claim PF, transfer accounts and track pension applications on the Member Portal.
  • Mobile users: create or activate your UAN through UMANG.
  • Families: file a death claim online as the nominee.
  • Employers: register an establishment online.

What still needs an office is a short, specific list, covered at the end.

Correct Your Profile Without Your Employer

This used to be the slowest EPFO process. Since 19 January 2025, members can correct their own details online, with no documents and no employer approval, as long as the UAN is Aadhaar-verified.

What you can correct yourself:

  • Name
  • Date of birth
  • Gender
  • Nationality
  • Father’s or mother’s name
  • Marital status
  • Spouse’s name
  • Date of joining and date of leaving

The exception: if your UAN was issued before 1 October 2017, the correction still needs your employer’s certification.

Already have an old request stuck with your employer? You can delete it and resubmit under the new process, provided you qualify.

Why it matters: EPFO says about 27% of member grievances are about profile or KYC problems, and employers took about 28 days on average to approve these corrections.

What No Longer Needs Your Employer

A lot of EPFO advice online is out of date on this. According to EPFO’s June 2025 update:

  • Transfers: most transfer claims no longer need employer approval, from 15 January 2025.
  • Bank account: linking your bank account to your UAN no longer needs employer approval, from April 2025.
  • Cheque leaf: you no longer need to upload a cheque leaf or attested bank passbook with an online claim.
  • Wrong Member IDs: a Member ID wrongly linked to your UAN can now be unlinked online.

If an HR team or agent tells you that you need their sign-off for any of these, the information is outdated.

Death Claims Filed Online by the Nominee

When a member dies, the family doesn’t have to start at an EPFO office.

The Member Portal has two separate options:

  • Death Claim filing by Nominee (Claims): for PF and insurance.
  • Death Claim filing by Nominee (Pension): for the family pension.

EPFO’s passbook portal says PF, pension and EDLI insurance of up to ₹7 lakh can be paid online to eligible family members.

One condition decides how smooth this is: the member must have filed a nomination. EPFO says online death claims rely on it. If your own nomination is missing, filing it now is the most useful thing you can do for your family on EPFO.

Pensioners: Two Things Most People Don’t Know

1. You can get your pension at any bank, anywhere in India.

  • The Centralised Pension Payment System (CPPS) was rolled out to all EPFO regional offices from 1 January 2025.
  • If you move city or change bank, your Pension Payment Order no longer has to be sent from one office to another.

2. You can track a higher-wages pension application online.

  • If you applied for pension on higher wages, use the Track Application Status tile on the Member Portal homepage.
  • You don’t need to log in to see whether it has moved.

Employers: Registering With EPFO Online

You don’t have to visit an EPFO office to register an establishment.

  • Any establishment: register through the common Shram Suvidha portal.
  • New companies: since February 2020, companies incorporated through the Ministry of Corporate Affairs’ SPICe+ or AGILE-PRO forms are registered with EPFO automatically. That includes private and public limited companies and One Person Companies.

Once you’re registered: monthly ECR filing and challan payment happen on the Employer Portal.

For PM-VBRY (Pradhan Mantri Viksit Bharat Rozgar Yojana): EPFO has warned that employers who don’t file ECR on time can cost their employees the scheme’s benefits.

New Joiners: UAN and PM-VBRY

Creating your UAN:

  • Workers have been able to create their own UAN since 1 November 2019.
  • Since April 2025, Aadhaar face authentication on UMANG makes it fully contactless.

If you’re a first-time member under PM-VBRY, two steps decide whether you get the incentive:

  1. Face authentication: verify your UAN with it. Without this, EPFO withholds the benefit.
  2. A DBT-enabled bank account: the money is paid by direct benefit transfer. If your account isn’t enabled, ask your bank branch to turn it on.

Scheme details are on the official PM-VBRY portal.

Claims That Settle Without Anyone Touching Them

Under EPFO 3.0, claims that pass EPFO’s automatic risk checks are settled in under 3 days, compared with up to 20 days before.

The fastest way to qualify is a clean record: Aadhaar-verified UAN, correct profile, linked bank account and PAN. This is why the employer-free corrections above matter. They clear the mismatches that send a claim to manual checking.

What Still Can’t Be Done Fully Online

Be honest with yourself about these before you spend hours on the portal:

  • Profile corrections on an old UAN: UANs issued before 1 October 2017 still need employer certification.
  • Exempted establishments: if your company runs its own PF trust, withdrawals and statements go through the trust, not the EPFO portals.
  • Face authentication that keeps failing: EPFO directs members to their regional office.
  • International workers and citizens of Nepal or Bhutan: UANs are still created through the employer, not by face authentication.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Can I change my date of birth in EPFO online without my employer?
Yes, if your UAN is Aadhaar-verified and was issued on or after 1 October 2017. Older UANs need employer certification.
  2. Does a PF transfer still need employer approval?
In most cases, no. That requirement was dropped from 15 January 2025.
  3. Can a nominee claim PF online after a member’s death?
Yes. The Member Portal has separate death-claim options for PF and for pension, and EPFO pays up to ₹7 lakh online to eligible family members. A filed nomination makes the process work.
  4. Can I change my pension bank without visiting EPFO?
Since January 2025, the Centralised Pension Payment System lets you receive pension at any bank in India without your PPO being transferred between offices.
  5. How do I check my higher-pension application?
Use Track Application Status on the Member Portal homepage.
  6. How does a company register with EPFO online?
Through the Shram Suvidha portal. Companies incorporated on the MCA portal through SPICe+ or AGILE-PRO are registered automatically.
